Provisional Hospital Design Strategy Meeting

On the 7th of September 2024, we convened a highly productive meeting with the Director of John Cooper Architects to advance the planning of the proposed hospital in Kashmir. The session began with a thorough review of potential sites, where the team carefully considered critical factors like wind patterns, solar orientation, and topography to ensure that the hospital integrates seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Environmental factors were prioritised not only to maximise energy efficiency but also to enhance the comfort of patients and staff.

A significant point of discussion was how the hospital’s design could reflect and respect the inherent beauty of the Kashmir region. The architectural team proposed that the design should emphasise open spaces and natural elements, using courtyards and landscaped gardens to create an environment conducive to healing. These courtyards would serve not only as aesthetic elements but also as areas where patients, visitors, and staff could find moments of tranquility and connection to nature, reinforcing the region’s green and serene character.

As a case study, the architectural team referenced the Icelandic Hospital Project in Reykjavik, Iceland, a design renowned for its harmonious integration with the surrounding environment. The Reykjavik hospital's focus on creating a space that fosters wellness, sustainability, and connection to the landscape served as a guiding inspiration. The team suggested adopting a similar design ethos for the Kashmir hospital, with the intent of building a healthcare facility that not only serves the medical needs of the community but also creates a calming, restorative environment.

Throughout the meeting, it became clear that selecting the right site is a crucial step. John Cooper Architects emphasised the importance of firm decisions regarding the final location to ensure the design meets all functional and environmental goals. The charity has committed to exploring all potential sites in greater depth, taking into consideration the topographical and environmental features that will support the overall architectural vision.

Once the final site is confirmed, we will proceed with detailed planning. This meeting represents a major milestone in the project’s journey, reflecting a strong partnership between the architectural team and the charity, united by the shared goal of creating a hospital that is not only a centre for medical care but also a symbol of harmony with the natural beauty of Kashmir.
