A scheduled meeting took place on Friday 30th August 2024 between Developing World Healthcare and the Managing Director of John Cooper Architects to advance the plans for the proposed state-of-the-art hospital in Azad Kashmir. This facility aims to address critical healthcare needs in the region, covering specialties such as maternal health, infectious diseases, genetics, oncology, palliative care, paediatrics, and emergency services.
During the meeting, a virtual site review was conducted to thoroughly assess the location’s suitability for the hospital. The discussion delved into several key architectural considerations essential for hospital design.
Topography:Â The site's natural contours and elevations were carefully examined to understand how they might influence the hospital's structural design, drainage systems, and overall layout. This analysis will help ensure that the building is well-integrated with the landscape, maximising stability and minimising construction challenges.
Surrounding Environment:Â Considerations included the proximity to residential areas, accessibility via local transport networks, and the potential impact of environmental factors such as prevailing winds and seasonal weather variations. The goal is to create a hospital that is both accessible to the community and resilient to environmental conditions.
Natural Light:Â The design discussions emphasized optimizing natural light within the hospital to enhance patient well-being, reduce energy costs, and create a more inviting and therapeutic environment. Strategic placement of windows and the use of light wells were considered to maximize daylight in key areas like patient rooms, operating theatres, and communal spaces.
Accessibility:Â The hospital's design must prioritize easy access for all users, including patients, staff, and visitors. This includes planning for ample parking, clear signage, wheelchair accessibility throughout the facility, and convenient access to public transportation. Considerations also included the flow of traffic into and out of the hospital to ensure efficiency and safety.
Patient Flow:Â The internal layout of the hospital was discussed with a focus on optimizing patient flow. This involves minimizing travel distances between departments, ensuring clear and direct routes for patients and staff, and designing waiting areas that reduce congestion while maintaining comfort and privacy.
Sustainability:Â Sustainable design practices were highlighted, including the use of energy-efficient materials, renewable energy sources, and water conservation systems. The hospital is intended to be a model of environmental responsibility, with features like solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and green roofing considered.
Future Expansion Potential:Â The hospital's design will incorporate flexibility for future expansions, ensuring that additional facilities or services can be integrated without significant disruption. This foresight will help accommodate growing healthcare demands and advances in medical technology.
In addition to these architectural elements, the schedule of accommodation was meticulously reviewed. Adjustments were made to ensure that the hospital can efficiently meet the diverse needs of the community it will serve. The space allocation for each department was re-evaluated to balance functionality with comfort, ensuring that each area is adequately equipped to manage its specific responsibilities.
The discussions on the initial design of the hospital were highly productive. The design will now progress to the development of formal sketches, which will provide a more detailed visual representation of the proposed structure and layout.
This meeting was a major step forward in the project, and Developing World Healthcare expresses profound gratitude to John Cooper Architects for their unwavering commitment. The firm’s decision to provide their services at a significantly subsidised rate as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives is deeply appreciated. Their support is instrumental in realising this essential healthcare project, which will have a lasting impact on the region.
A formal letter of appointment will be issued to John Cooper Architects, and the contractual engagement will follow. These items, along with further design refinements, will be reviewed in the next meeting to ensure continued progress toward the successful completion of the hospital.
